Betty Crocker Gluten Free Cake Mix

Betty Crocker has a bunch of gluten free mixes.  This is the first time we tried this particular Betty Crocker Devil's Food Chocolate mix. Two thumbs up. It earns the name devil's food chocolate.

Amanda made the cake with the Betty Crocker Whipped cream cheese also labelled gluten free.  The cake was light and fluffy and rich and flavour.  It also had a pretty good counter life because it made a pretty big cake so we ate it all during the week and it did not get hard and dry, or any less fluffy.

We used a bigger pan than it called for, so it wasn't as tall as it could be, so next time we will probably use a small pan.

We definitely recommend the Betty Crocker gluten free Devil's Food Chocolate mix!

Prana's Gluten Free Coconut Chip

Prana Organic sent us some samples of their new coconut chips to try out,  Prana's coconut chips are GF Certified, non-GMO but most of all pretty tasty.  I look coconut to begin within, so they really didn't have to twist my arm to try these out.

I thought these were going to be your standard coconut chip/coconut bacon that everyone has been selling, but these are truly more like a chip, sliced in thin moon shapes, and made crisp.  What makes it even more of a chip is the seasoning they come in, spicy chili, sea salt and pepper, BBQ and original.  I didn't want to spoil them and open all the packages, so I tried the original and sea salt and pepper.  The seas salt and pepper was a nice surprise to an already tasty food.  I can't wait to crack up the BBQ and spicy chili when I get the chance.

You can find Prana products at most natural and organic food stores.  We've also seen Prana products at Costco!

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila floor! - El Cortez serves up yummy gluten free food!

We were recently invited to El Cortez Mexican Kitchen and Tequila Bar to sample their new 2015 winter menu.  Amanda and I always love Mexican food.  Not just because Mexican food uses a lot of corn flour, but because the flavours are bold and beautiful.

We arrived at the event about a half hour into things, so other bloggers and foodies were way ahead of, sampling the delicious flavours El Cortez has to offer.  But we didn't just jump into things, after all, we have to watch what we eat.

It didn't take long for us to find out who was in charge of the event.  After asking one of the smiling servers to speak with someone from the kitchen, Cressida, El Cortez's Marketing Manager came out to speak to us.

We were happy but not to surprised to find out that Cressida has Celiac as well (and that's why we got invited), because she was confident we could enjoy El Cortez's new winter menu.

El Cortez is definitely a happening place to be.  Restaurant upstairs, and bar and lounge downstairs in the cantina.  Very trendy dark yet bright decor that we loved.

Restaurant upstairs. - Very modern, very hip, very trendy
Pretty amazing stairs down to the lounge
We sampled quite a bit of their menu and pretty much enjoyed all of it.  My favourite bite was the cucumber salad and Amanda's favourite bite was the Molten Queso Dip with Chorizo.  Quite frankly, we could have kept on eating if we didn't have a baby sitter waiting for us at home!

The presentation of all the samples were great, and I imagine will be just as beautiful off the menu.  So a little disclaimer for the following photos.  What was served at this party was not complete orders, these were bite size orders for everyone to sample.  If you just want to see what you can order gluten free, scroll right to the bottom.  Cressida was amazing, and within 5 minutes of leaving El Cortez, she emailed us a marked up version of the menu crossing off non-gluten free items, and marketing what can be made gluten free just by asking for their home made corn tortillas.

An assortment of their dips.  The far right is the Molten Queso that Amanda loved

This was probably my second favourite bite, Snapper Ceviche (Remember that small bit is NOT $12, you get a full order)
My favourite bite, the Cucumber Salad with jcama, charred corn and lime dressing

This pumkin caramel custard was actually the
first thing we tried!  Delicious!
Marked up menu so you can see what is and is not gluten free.

Gluten Free Options Available at The Underground Tap and Grill

The Manager from the The Underground Tap and Grill is located downtown contacted me about their lunch and dinner menus that feature many clearly labelled Celiac friendly options.

Ontop of a gluten free menu options, The Underground Tap and Grill does carry gluten free beer options on their drink menu, and will have added a gluten free dessert to their upcoming 2015-016 winter menu.

Although there is risk for cross contamination, their manager Kristin said they take allergies very seriously when preparing our food.

A few of the Manager's favourite gluten free options are
  • the cuban stew
  • vegetable pakoras (which are also vegan friendly),
  • the poutine au canard.
  • Decadent dessert (a chocolate molten lava cake with homemade vanilla bean ice cream)
The gluten free beers served are from Omission brewing.

It is important to note though that their ciders on tap can't be guaranteed to be gluten free because their selection of beers rotates a lot and this would risk cross contamination of gluten from previous beers getting into the ciders even with proper line flushing.

You can check out their full menu online that indicates all their gluten free friendly options.
