Navigating a big food festival like this when you're looking for gluten free friendly eats can sometimes feel a bit like a treasure hunt, but with a few twists! While it's wonderful that Taste of Edmonton highlights gluten-friendly dishes, it's always smart to remember a few things when you're out and about at any food festival:

First, gluten free friendly means that while a dish is made with ingredients that don't contain gluten, it's prepared in a shared kitchen environment. This means there's always a possibility of cross-contamination, even if the vendor is super careful. It's just the reality of a busy, shared space, so it's always wise to be extra mindful. Always feel empowered to ask questions about how items are prepared, and if they use shared fryers or separate utensils.

We truly appreciate that Taste of Edmonton is making an effort to label these options clearly. It takes so much guesswork out of the experience and helps us find potentially safe and delicious treats much faster. That little tag next to the menu item is a big help!  With that being said, sometimes at festivals like this, mistakes can happen with the labelling.  So you if you are not familiar with the vendor, you can reconfirm the label. Something could have accidentally been labeled gluten free friendly, or even something that is gluten free friendly might not be listed because the vendor forgot to submit their allergens.

Here’s a little extra tip that can make your gluten free friendly festival experience even smoother: try visiting during non-peak times. If you can swing it, going earlier in the day or during off-peak hours (like mid-afternoon on a weekday, if possible) can be a game-changer. When the booths aren't as swamped, the staff have a bit more time and space to carefully prepare your food, which can help reduce the risk of accidental cross-contamination. It makes a big difference!
