RL's Gluten Free Travels: New York City

Babycakes, Manhattan, New York
Babycakes
On a day trip from Hartford I ventured to the best GF bakery in Manhattan, Babycakes (http://www.babycakesnyc.com). Located in the lower east side it is easily accessible by subway. I have dreams about Babycakes and their baked goods. They are gluten free, dairy free, soy free, nut free and kosher! The best part is no one would ever be able to tell the difference. I've taken non GF friends there and they are in awe. If ever in the tri state area, put Babycakes on your must see list.

  1. I have the cookbook from Babycakes (compliments of my mother). I was curious and didn't really think I needed it until I wanted to bake for a Christmas Cookie swap with a fellow celiac friend with "extra" intolerances. I found a recipe in here that met EVERY criteria for her! No soy, no dairy, no wheat, no bannana, etc.

And they turned out pretty good - if you don't mind coconut oil. I have a particular dislike of coconut, and my mother served me cookies made from this book. Let's say I thought there was something "different" and "perfumey" but couldn't place my finger on it. She would not tell me what was "different" until I finished the 4th one… Couldn't help myself.

  2. This will definitely be a destination for our next NYC visit! I'm not sure if I heard about the cookbook. Thanks for the tip on that, and I'll pass this on to our friend RL!

  3. I've heard mixed reviews about the cookbook. I have been too lazy too try it. All I know is nothing beats someone else doing the baking for you, even if it means traveling to NY. I can't wait to go back.
