Fit+ Initiative on campus from NAIT's Food Services indicates gluten free

Eating on campus can be tricky at times. There are often the usual suspects on campus to order from, but what about the NAIT's Common Markets run by Food Services? NAIT's FIT+ program helps identify different food choices such as Local, cage free, whole grain, Halal, as well as "made without gluten."

I know this one can be tricky to understand, because it is only "made without gluten" and not "gluten free" or "gluten free friendly". So we have to understand that for NAIT, these labels mean these are dishes that do not have gluten ingredients.

You already know the dish doesn't contain gluten so you should be able to take these additional steps to help you eat safely:

  • Ask food prep staff to change their gloves and clean prep area to reduce cross contamination.
  • Ask food prep staff to use fresh serving utensils such as ladles and tongs for your order.
  • If there is a sandwich building station, ask if they can grab from a fresh ingredients pile not used yet.
  • Get an idea of the busy times and less busy times of the Common Market, and try to visit during less busy times.

Eat at NAIT often? What tips do you have?
