What you didn't know about spring rolls made in Saskatchewan

We have been attending the CRAFT Beer Market, Gluten Free Brewmaster for several years.  Kerry from Care Bakery has been developing the menu for the event for at least the past two years.

This year she had Saskatchewan spring rolls on the menu.

GF Spring Roll from GF Brewmasters Event
What the heck is a Saskatchewan spring roll?  Well, she told us that in Saskatchewan, restaurants make their spring rolls with rice paper.  All the same fillings.  So they are all naturally gluten free.

Let's jump over to Edmonton now at Nha Trang Restaurant across the street from the Royal Alexandra Hospital.  Amanda decided to grab lunch from their one afternoon, hoping to be able to have a vermicelli bowl.  Well she got that and more.

After speaking with one of the people at the counter, they pointed out that most of the items on the menu are gluten free.  When it was pointed out that the spring rolls were gluten free she naturally questioned it.

They said they make their spring rolls with rice paper.  Which makes me like to believe they are bringing a little bit of gf Saskatchewan to Edmonton!

Amanda said it tasted great, and she was so happy that she was able to order a vermicelli bowl with the spring rolls because every other time she has to omit it in the order but still pay the same price.

You can find Nha Trang on skip the dishes, so you don't have trek across the city if you are not nearby.

Nichol's Cafe in St. Albert

Ashley shared a great find in St. Albert.  Ya, that;s right, St. Albert!

She checked out Nichol's Cafe located in the Riel Business Park.  Ashley says the owner has Celiac Disease and keeps the kitchen mainly gluten free.  I would like to think Ashley takes great care in cross contamination.

Ashley tried out their teriyaki chicken with rice and ginger beef with noodles and said it was delicious!

They also have burgers, that can be lettuce wrapped or in a gluten free bun that was introduced in a recent Facebook post.

You can check out Nichol's Cafe menu on SkipTheDishes.com, or visit their Facebook Page.  I think all Nichol's Cafe is missing is a good website to get you all the gf information you need in one spot.  Apparently they also have gf baked goodies.

We went to a BBQ, and a friend with Celiac did three things amazingly

We are well into BBQ season, which can sometimes be tough at family and friends when there are hot dog and hamburger buns all over.  You just worry about cross contamination.

At the birthday BBQ, they were asking who was having what, I was wondering what Amanda was going to say, but instead a friend that has Celiac (and follower of this blog) that we recently met sprung into action.  It was great see the questions happen from at outside perspective. They did three things amazingly:
  1. Asked if the sausages were gluten free
  2. Politely ignored everyone else that started to chime in (and believe me it was hard for me to keep my mouth shut, but I did, because I knew I was watching a pro)
  3. Asked if theirs could be made first
Their approach was awesome, and would make anyone with Celiac proud. The master griller understood everything, was happy to help, and understood who he should be listening too.
