Finding the right gluten free Matzah Ball recipe

Gluten free matzah balls
I can always count on my brother from Haggis and Herring to be looking out for a good gluten free recipe to try.  Rosh Hashana is around the corner, and my brother knows that Matzah Balls are a staple at the dinner table during our Jewish New Year.

The other day Dan emailed me a recipe to yet another gluten free matzah ball to try.  He emailed us one last year with a potato base that tastes awesome.  But its just not like the real thing.  We didn't end up sharing that recipe but maybe one day we will.

In the meantime, I will share this recipe he passed on because it looks great.  I sent it to my mother-n-law knowing she is brave enough to try any new gluten free recipe we pass her way.  She really does get gluten free cooking and baking!

Served up for the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah
The recipe is from the Gluten Free A-Z Blog.  I'll admit, I have never read this blog, but this recipe for gluten free matzah balls looked to good to be true using bread cubes from Glutino.  Note, my mother'n'law tried the recipe with Kinnikinnick bread cubes and it didn't work because they were made from rice.  Must use Glutino bred cubes found at Planet Organic.

  • 2 T oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup gluten free breadcrumbs
  • 1 T salt
  • 2 T seltzer ( optional)
  •  ** If you do not have to make them gluten free, substitute regular breadcrumbs or ground matzo meal instead of the gluten free breadcrumbs.
Directions
  1. Put up an 8qt pot of water and bring it to a boil with a little salt if you like
In the meantime
  1. In a small bowl beat eggs and oil and set aside
  2. In a separate bowl mix bread crumbs and salt.
  3. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and blend well with fork.
  4. Add seltzer
  5. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes ( this step is important)
  6. Remove batter from refrigerator. Divide batter into just slightly smaller than golf ball size balls ( should make about 8-10 .
  7. When water comes to a boil, drop in balls one at a time into the boiling water
  8. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 30-40 minutes.
  9. Add to warm soup and serve.
If you have tried the recipe, let us know how it turned out for you because we know they taste amazing.  The photos above should say it all!  What an amazing recipe shared by Gluten Free A-Z

  1. Wow! Thank you for featuring my gluten free matzo ball post! When you do try them, you will not be dissapointed. I tried so many matzo ball recipes before this one and although others were tasty, this was the only one that really was an authentic ( non) matzo ball.

I served it to a group of 20 ( almost all regular eaters) and everyone raved about my matzo bolls.

You have an Interesting blog. I'll be back to see more gluten free ideas and recips

  3. It is great that there is a gluten-free matzo ball recipe available. There are individuals that are into eating foods that are free of gluten and this is a wonderful addition to those. This will be eventually enjoyed by everyone especially when served during Passover catering dinners.

It is good that there are now available recipes for this that are gluten-free. Those who are carefully watching their diets will surely be thrilled to know this information. Thanks for sharing.
